 The always amazing Wood Duck (female) elegant subtle splendour! Pretty tough for the average Duck to compete with these regal creatures! Amazingly coloured and surprisingly common ducks all across Canada.

I am curious! Males are colourful, females aren't fur protecting an mothers. But... Do the males then fight off any predators who may attack the nest or young? Their bright colours should serve a useful purpose beyond looking pretty. 🤔😉

Those are some great questions ... I do know that the males are protective especially defending their females from other males. Your comment certainly gives me reason to ponder... I will try and research!
