These images taken over several days in early July 2015 , while photographing Herons @ Pat Bay. I observed 2 different groups of these entertaining ducks, the first , a female with 3 chicks surviving the perils of early life and the other group of around 15 , a slightly older brood. At 1 point I spent over an hour about 10 meters away from the older flock who was sun bathing, stretching and grooming on the beach! A joy to watch these colourful fish eaters!
The first few images show Mom with the kids .. practicing their snorkelling technique!

This is a new find for me on Vancouver Island ... I did know these colourful beauties existed here, but I had never found a wealth of them until this past May! They are wonderful to observe in their ducky habitats... A bit shy but if one sits quitely they reward you with many chances to make a nice image!
