The images I got were shot from quite a distance, but thanks to my friend Jody for alerting me to their presence! A group of 10 Sandhill Cranes are staging in Central Saanich and fattening up on a recently ploughed field of corn. Sandhills are not uncommon on the lower mainland or the prairies, but seldom seen on Vancouver Island.
I was driving into town today in a very heavy wind... Along Pat Bay I noticed a number of gulls acting like kites in the wind and 2 other birds. 1 was an Osprey holding above the water , obviously fishing and the other was this Heron. I couldn't get the camera out fast enough to catch the action, but this bird was trying to attack the Osprey who he's decided was a threat. Look at the posture on this Heron... Not all photos need to be crystal clear to be fun! This little Anna's male was doing some grooming in the light rain today, then zoomed off the rail towards me! whirrrrr! :)
Ohhhh the rain! (young male Annas Hummingbird)
This little charmer enjoys a light rain in todays sprinke... Being from a hatch earlier this year and given the dryness of the long Summer, this may be the first real rain he has encountered.... thanks for looking! Terry The Annas Hummingbirds go through a Summer moult .. This adult male is getting some new feathers! A young Annas male puffs up his feathers in the cool morning air... Birds have the ability to add insulation quickly by fluffing up their feathers or relaxing them and going for a more streamlined look depending on the air temperature or if they want to appear larger and go on the defence of their territory. Definition of iridescence 1 : a lustrous rainbowlike play of color caused by differential refraction of light waves (as from an oil slick, soap bubble, or fish scales) that tends to change as the angle of view changes... (this may also apply to birds :) , in fact it does .. same bird top and bottom, but moments in time and angle difference. |
