Abobe image .... young Rufous hummingbird zooms off to meet an adult male who may well be his dad. Red blotch on the left is the adult out of focus and on the right exposing those flared tail feathers is the back end of young Rufe! Incredible flight skills already only a short time out of the nest! The same bird below stationed at the feeder.... *. The adolescent male Rufous look much like the females for several months until they get their full coloured feathering ... I rarely ever see the transition because when this happens they have long since migrated away South for the winter. Above .. a very young female Rufous poses

May 24th around 12:30 PM , I was back at the farm watching the birds as the hay/grass was being cut and baled. Took many photos in less than good light conditions but very exciting to see up to 10 eagles descend onto the field catching mostly mice, exposed by the farming situation. I took a stroll around the pond and watched this male Red Wing Blackbird launch himself towards a low flying eagle and proceed to actually land on his back for a moment. Quite the gutsy manoeuvre to say the least! Chase your enemy with reckless abandon! the ancient question remains unanswered,,,, Now that you've caught the Eagle... What are you going to do with it? Surfing the Eagle ... Nature continues to amaze me! |
